Acre to Bigha in Himachal Pradesh: Converter Table (2026)

A static acre to bigha table for Himachal Pradesh using the 8,712 sq ft bigha (five to the acre), with biswa, kanal and marla columns, the formula, worked examples and how to read your jamabandi.

Farmland India Reviewed · Updated October 2026 · Tool page: static reference tables

In Himachal Pradesh five bigha make one acre, because the bigha (बीघा) is 8,712 sq ft or 968 sq yd. This page gives the acre to bigha table from 1 to 100 acres, with biswa and the kanal-marla units used in the lower hills, plus the formula, three worked examples and the steps to check your jamabandi (जमाबंदी).

Acre to bigha table for Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is the easiest hill state to convert, because the bigha (बीघा) documented in our Bigha and biswa in Himachal Pradesh guide is exactly one fifth of an acre: 8,712 sq ft or 968 sq yd. Five bigha make an acre, and 100 biswa (बिस्वा) make an acre. This page defaults to that 8,712 sq ft bigha. The kanal and marla columns are included because the lower-hill districts that came from Punjab in 1966 record land in those units instead.

The bigha column is acres × 5 and the biswa column acres × 100. Kanal is acres × 8 and marla acres × 160. Hectares use 1 acre = 0.404686 hectare, rounded to three places.

1 marla (1/20 kanal)272.2530.2525.290.006250.00253160 marla

The HP bigha of 968 sq yd sits between the small western UP bigha (756.25 sq yd) and the Terai or kachcha bigha (1,936 sq yd). It is exactly 1.6 kanal by area (968 ÷ 605), but our live guide warns against treating the two as one system, because a record kept in kanal-marla will never show bigha and the two measures grew up under different settlements. Use the kanal column only to understand what a kanal-based quote means in area, never to rewrite one record's unit into the other.

Our live guide also mentions a single-source alternative of about 907.5 sq ft per bigha (5 biswa per bigha, roughly 48 bigha per acre), which it flags as unresolved and not verified against a primary HP source. We do not use that figure anywhere in the tables. If a seller's bigha count is about ten times what this page gives, that is the figure they are using, and you should ask for the record.

Formula and method

  • HP bigha = Acre × 5 (because 4,840 ÷ 968 = 5)
  • HP biswa = Acre × 100, or bigha × 20
  • Acre = HP bigha × 0.2, or biswa × 0.01
  • Kanal = Acre × 8; Marla = Acre × 160 (parallel system, lower hills)
  • From hectares: Acre = Hectare × 2.47105, so HP bigha = Hectare × 12.35525

Himachal jamabandi (जमाबंदी) copies from HimBhoomi often show the area in bigha-biswa-biswansi in the hill districts and in kanal-marla in Kangra, Una, Hamirpur and parts of the lower hills; digitised records in some tribal districts also carry a hectare or square metre figure. Where a hectare figure is present, treat it as the legal area and use the formula above to check the bigha count.

Five bigha to the acre is a quick sanity check

If a Himachal quote gives a bigha count that is not close to five times the acreage, either the land is in a kanal-marla district and someone has translated loosely, or a non-standard bigha is in play. Stop and ask for the jamabandi before discussing price.

Three worked examples

Example 1: 2 acres of orchard land near Shimla. 2 × 5 = 10 bigha, or 200 biswa. In square feet, 2 × 43,560 = 87,120 sq ft; in hectares about 0.809 ha.

Example 2: a seller quotes 12 bigha in Solan. 12 × 968 = 11,616 sq yd = 104,544 sq ft. Divided by 4,840 that is 2.4 acres, or about 0.971 hectare. If the asking price is Rs 30 lakh per bigha, the rate per acre is Rs 1.5 crore.

Example 3: a HimBhoomi record showing 0.6000 hectare. 0.6 × 2.47105 = 1.4826 acres. × 5 = 7.41 bigha, or 7 bigha 8.3 biswa. In a kanal-marla district the same 0.6 hectare would be written as about 11.86 kanal, or roughly 11 kanal 17.2 marla.

District comparison: which unit you will meet

Our live guide describes three patterns, from a single source and not exhaustively verified. We repeat them as a guide to what to expect, not as a rule.

AreaUnits you are likely to see in the recordUse this page's column

Kangra, Kullu and lower-hill areas transferred from Punjab in 1966Bigha-biswa blended with kanal-marlaCheck the record; kanal and marla columns where the record is in kanal

Non-agriculturists buying in Himachal also face the Section 118 permission rule, which applies regardless of how the area is measured. Read Himachal Section 118 explained before you negotiate.

How to use this with your jamabandi

  1. Obtain the jamabandi copy through HimBhoomi. Our guide to jamabandi in Himachal Pradesh walks through it.
  2. Read the unit in the area column: bigha-biswa-biswansi, kanal-marla, or hectare.
  3. If the record is in bigha-biswa, multiply bigha by 0.2 and biswa by 0.01 to get acres, and check against this page's table.
  4. If the record is in kanal-marla, divide kanal by 8 and marla by 160 to get acres. Do not convert it into bigha for the agreement; keep the record's unit.
  5. If a hectare figure is present, treat it as the legal area and check that the bigha or kanal count agrees with it to within a biswa or marla.
  6. Have the boundaries shown on the Bhu Naksha map for Himachal and measured on site before the main payment. See how to verify land title.

What this page does not confirm

The 8,712 sq ft bigha is the standard figure on our live Himachal guide, which rates its confidence as moderate to good but did not find a Himachal revenue notification fixing it. The district patterns above come from a single source. The alternative 907.5 sq ft figure is unresolved and not used here. Biswansi values are not defined on our live page, so this page gives none. As always, the figure in the jamabandi is the legal area, and a bigha count is a description of it. For other states see the bigha size by state comparison table and the general acre to bigha converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bigha in one acre in Himachal Pradesh?
Five. The HP bigha on our live guide is 8,712 sq ft or 968 sq yd, so 5 × 8,712 = 43,560 sq ft, exactly one acre.
How many square feet is one bigha in Himachal?
8,712 sq ft, which is 968 sq yd, about 809.4 sq m, 0.2 acre and about 0.081 hectare.
How many biswa in a Himachal bigha?
Twenty. One biswa is about 435.6 sq ft or 48.4 sq yd, and 100 biswa make an acre.
Is a Himachal bigha the same as a kanal?
No. A kanal is 605 sq yd and a bigha is 968 sq yd, so a bigha is 1.6 kanal by area. They belong to different record systems, and our live guide warns against converting one record into the other.
Which districts use kanal and marla instead of bigha?
Our live guide names Kangra, Kullu and lower-hill areas transferred from Punjab in 1966 as places where kanal-marla appears, often blended with bigha-biswa. Read the unit in the record itself.
How many bigha is one hectare in Himachal?
About 12.36 bigha, since 1 hectare = 2.47105 acres and each acre is 5 bigha.
What about the 907.5 sq ft bigha some sites quote?
Our live guide records it as a single-source figure that it could not verify against a primary Himachal source. It is not used on this page. If a quote implies it, ask for the jamabandi.
Which figure does this page default to?
The 8,712 sq ft (968 sq yd) bigha, with 20 biswa to the bigha.
Is there an official Himachal notification fixing the bigha?
We could not find one. The figure comes from our own published research and should be confirmed with the patwari for your village.
Does the measurement unit affect Section 118 permission?
No. Section 118 of the HP Tenancy and Land Reforms Act applies to non-agriculturists regardless of area unit. See our Section 118 explainer.
