Kanal to Marla Converter: Punjab, Haryana & Himachal (2026)

Convert kanal to marla, square yards, square feet and acres (0.25 to 200 kanal), read K-M entries in a jamabandi, and add up khasras correctly, with three worked examples.

Farmland India Reviewed · Updated October 2026 · Unit values from our live Haryana and Punjab unit guides

One kanal (कनाल) is 20 marla (मरला), 605 square yards or 5,445 square feet, and eight kanal make an acre. This converter tabulates kanal to marla, gaj, square feet and acres, shows how to read a 3K-12M jamabandi entry, and how to add several khasras without losing marla.

How to read this table

In Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and much of Himachal Pradesh the record of rights measures land in kanal (कनाल) and marla (मरला). The jamabandi (जमाबंदी) will show an entry like 3K-12M, meaning 3 kanal 12 marla, and the fard (फर्द) repeats it. Twenty marla make one kanal and eight kanal make one acre, so one marla is 1/160 of an acre. Those ratios are what this page tabulates.

The square foot and square yard values follow from the karam (करम), the historic pace of 5.5 feet on which the system is built. One square karam, called a sarsahi (सरसाही), is 5.5 × 5.5 = 30.25 sq ft; nine sarsahi make a marla of 272.25 sq ft (30.25 sq yd); twenty marla make a kanal of 5,445 sq ft (605 sq yd); eight kanal make the 43,560 sq ft acre. These are the figures on our live guides to kanal and marla in Haryana and Punjab and marla, kanal and killa in Punjab. Both guides say they could not find an official published table; the figures are consistent across sources and with the acre.

Values cross-checked, not officially tabulated

Our Haryana and Punjab unit guides state that no currently published official land-record conversion table could be located, and that the 5.5 ft karam, 272.25 sq ft marla and 5,445 sq ft kanal are well cross-checked secondary figures. Pre-1957 district variants with a different karam existed (our guide names 60-inch and 57.5-inch karams in the Amritsar, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar areas). For a current sale, the jamabandi area and the tehsil's own conversion govern; confirm with the patwari if an old settlement is involved.

Kanal to marla table (0.25 to 200 kanal)

Read your kanal figure in the first column. The marla column is exact (× 20). Square yard and square foot columns are exact arithmetic; square metres use 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 sq m; the acre column is kanal ÷ 8.

Marla to kanal table (1 to 40 marla)

For small plots and for the fractional part of a record entry. The sarsahi column (9 per marla) is included because some older Punjab records carry a third figure, kanal-marla-sarsahi.

The formula and reading K-M entries

Marla = kanal × 20. Kanal = marla ÷ 20. Square feet = marla × 272.25 = kanal × 5,445. Square yards = marla × 30.25 = kanal × 605. Acres = kanal ÷ 8 = marla ÷ 160. Hectares = acres × 0.404686.

A jamabandi entry written 3K-12M (or 3-12 under a heading "kanal marla") is 3 kanal 12 marla. Convert it by multiplying kanal by 20 and adding marla: 3 × 20 + 12 = 72 marla, which is 3.6 kanal, 2,178 sq yd, 19,602 sq ft or 0.45 acre. The table below converts the mixed entries buyers meet most often.

Three worked examples

Example 1: a Haryana jamabandi shows 7K-8M for the khasra being sold. 7 × 20 + 8 = 148 marla = 7.4 kanal. In area: 148 × 272.25 = 40,293 sq ft, or 4,477 sq yd, or 0.925 acre, about 0.374 ha. The seller describes it as "about an acre". It is 92.5 percent of an acre; at an acre price that is a 7.5 percent overpayment. Check the entry in our guide to jamabandi nakal in Haryana.

Example 2: a Punjab fard lists three khasras: 2K-5M, 1K-15M and 0K-10M. Add the marla: (40 + 5) + (20 + 15) + 10 = 45 + 35 + 10 = 90 marla = 4 kanal 10 marla = 4.5 kanal. That is 2,722.5 sq yd, 24,502.5 sq ft or 0.5625 acre. Always add in marla first, then convert back, so that carried-over marla (20 to a kanal) are not lost. See fard Punjab online.

Example 3: a 250 gaj plot in a Mohali colony, and the seller calls it "8 marla". 250 ÷ 30.25 = 8.26 marla, so the plot is a little more than 8 marla; 8 marla exactly would be 242 gaj (2,178 sq ft). Both descriptions are in common use for the same plot; the deed should carry the precise figure, 250 sq yd, because a marla rounding of 8 gaj is 72 sq ft of land.

State comparison: where kanal and marla apply

  • Punjab: kanal-marla is the record unit statewide; 8 kanal = 1 killa (acre); 25 killa = 1 murabba. See killa to bigha and killa and murabba explained.
  • Haryana: kanal-marla in rural records; urban plots in square yards. Our guide reports no district-level exception in present practice.
  • Himachal Pradesh: kanal-marla in several districts alongside bigha-biswa (8,712 sq ft bigha). Our Himachal guide gives 1 kanal = 5,445 sq ft there too, but advises against converting bigha to kanal directly because the bigha base is disputed in some areas. See bigha and biswa in Himachal.
  • Jammu and Kashmir: kanal-marla is used; our unit guides do not define it for J&K and this page makes no claim for that territory.
  • Delhi NCR: gaj or square metres; marla appears only in Haryana-side villages. See gaj to square feet.
  • Pakistan Punjab (for comparison only): our guide notes a marla commonly standardised at 225 sq ft there; it is not the Indian figure, and online calculators sometimes mix the two.

How to use this with your document

  1. Pull the jamabandi for every khasra number in the sale, from the state portal (Haryana jamabandi portal, Punjab Easy Jamabandi). Note each K-M figure.
  2. Convert each to marla (kanal × 20 + marla), add them, then convert the total back to K-M and to acres. This total is the land you are buying; compare it with the agreement to sell.
  3. If the seller is one of several co-owners of a khewat, his share is a fraction of the khewat total, not the whole khasra. Convert the share, not the khasra. See khasra and khatauni explained.
  4. Compute the price per marla and per acre from the record total, and compare with the collector rate for the village, which in Haryana and Punjab is usually notified per acre or per marla for agricultural land. See circle rate lookup Haryana.
  5. Ask for demarcation (nishandehi) before registry and have the measured area reconciled with the record in marla. See land demarcation.
✓

Carry the marla

20 marla, not 100, make a kanal. 3K-15M plus 2K-10M is 6K-5M, not 5K-25M. Errors of this kind survive into agreements to sell more often than you would expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many marla are in one kanal?
20 marla. One marla is 272.25 sq ft (30.25 sq yd) and one kanal is 5,445 sq ft (605 sq yd), per our Haryana and Punjab unit guides.
How many kanal in an acre?
8 kanal, or 160 marla. In Punjab the acre is also called a killa.
What is 1 marla in square feet and gaj?
272.25 sq ft, which is 30.25 gaj (square yards) or about 25.29 sq m.
What does 3K-12M mean on a jamabandi?
3 kanal 12 marla: 72 marla in total, 3.6 kanal, 2,178 sq yd, 19,602 sq ft or 0.45 acre.
Is the kanal the same in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal?
Our guides give 5,445 sq ft for all three, with no current district exception reported for Punjab and Haryana. Pre-1957 variants with a different karam existed in some Punjab districts.
How many marla is a 250 gaj plot?
250 ÷ 30.25 = about 8.26 marla. An exact 8 marla plot is 242 gaj.
What is a sarsahi?
One square karam, 5.5 ft × 5.5 ft = 30.25 sq ft. Nine sarsahi make a marla. Some older records carry kanal-marla-sarsahi.
Is there an official kanal to marla table?
The 20 marla to a kanal ratio is standard in the record itself. Our guides could not locate an official published square-foot table, so the 272.25 and 5,445 sq ft figures are cross-checked secondary values.
How do I convert kanal to hectares?
Kanal ÷ 8 gives acres; multiply by 0.404686 for hectares. One kanal is about 0.0506 ha; one hectare is about 19.77 kanal.
Why does a Pakistani marla calculator give 225 sq ft?
Our guide notes that Pakistan commonly standardised the marla at 225 sq ft. Indian records use 272.25 sq ft; do not mix the two.
