Gaj to Square Feet Converter: 1 to 1,000 Gaj Table (2026)

A fixed-definition table converting 1 to 1,000 gaj (square yards) into square feet, square metres and acres, with common plot sizes of 50, 100, 200 and 500 gaj, the formula and worked examples.

Farmland India Reviewed · Updated October 2026 · Fixed definition: 1 gaj = 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft

One gaj (गज) is one square yard, which is exactly 9 square feet and about 0.8361 square metres, in every state. This converter prints 1 to 1,000 gaj in square feet, square metres and acres, with the plot sizes NCR buyers meet most often, so you can check a quote against the record in seconds.

How to read this table

Gaj (गज) and square yard mean the same thing in land dealing: an area one yard by one yard. Since a yard is three feet, a square yard is 3 × 3 = 9 square feet. That is a fixed definition, not a local custom, so unlike bigha or biswa this conversion is the same in Delhi, Gurugram, Jaipur, Chandigarh and Dehradun. Our explainer gaj vs square yard vs square foot covers the history of the term; this page is the working table.

The table runs from 1 to 100 gaj in single steps, then 110 to 1,000 gaj in steps of ten. The square metre column uses 1 sq yd = 0.836127 sq m (0.9144 m squared) and the acre column uses 4,840 gaj per acre. All three derived columns are exact arithmetic rounded once.

Square metres matter because the circle rate (सर्किल रेट) in Delhi and much of NCR is notified per square metre, and because Rajasthan and UP records print hectares and square metres. Being able to move between gaj, square feet and square metres without a phone is a small but real advantage when a broker is quoting fast.

Common plot sizes: 50, 100, 200, 500 gaj and more

Residential and farmhouse plots in NCR, Punjab and Haryana are marketed in a small set of standard gaj sizes. This table gives each in square feet, square metres, marla (the Punjab and Haryana record unit, 30.25 gaj) and acres, with one typical frontage and depth in feet that produces that area. The frontage figures are illustrations of shape, not a standard; plots of the same gaj come in many shapes.

4,840 gaj (one acre)43,5604,046.851601198 × 220

A 100 gaj plot at 900 sq ft is close to 3 marla (90.75 gaj), which is why Punjab and Haryana sellers will describe roughly the same plot as "3 marla" and NCR sellers as "100 gaj". A 250 gaj plot is about 8.26 marla, and a 500 gaj plot about 16.5 marla. For the kanal and marla side of this see kanal to marla.

The formula

Square feet = gaj × 9. Gaj = square feet ÷ 9.

Square metres = gaj × 0.836127. Gaj = square metres × 1.19599. Square feet = square metres × 10.7639. Acres = gaj ÷ 4,840. Hectares = gaj × 0.836127 ÷ 10,000.

When a record prints square metres and a broker quotes gaj, this reverse table gives the gaj and square feet for typical record entries. One hectare is 11,959.9 gaj, and 4,047 square metres is one acre to the nearest square metre.

Three worked examples

Example 1: a 200 gaj plot in a Gurugram sector. 200 × 9 = 1,800 sq ft, or 167.23 sq m. If the circle rate for that sector is published per square metre, multiply it by 167.23 to get the minimum value on which stamp duty is assessed; if the collector rate is per square yard, multiply by 200. Our circle rate vs market rate guide explains why the two can diverge.

Example 2: a 500 gaj farmhouse plot on the Delhi fringe described as "4,500 square feet". 4,500 ÷ 9 = 500 gaj, so the two descriptions agree. In square metres it is 418.06; in acres it is 0.1033, about a tenth of an acre. If the record of rights shows 0.0418 ha (418 sq m) the plot matches; if it shows 0.0632 ha, the seller is quoting a different plot or including a road strip.

Example 3: a Delhi record shows 125 square metres and the seller says "150 gaj". 125 ÷ 0.836127 = 149.50 gaj, or 1,345.5 sq ft. The seller's 150 gaj is a fair rounding. Had the seller said 175 gaj, the gap would be 25 gaj (225 sq ft), about 17 percent, and the price per gaj should fall accordingly. See gaj, square yard and square foot in Delhi NCR.

Where gaj is used, and what the record says instead

  • Delhi: plots are quoted in gaj, records and circle rates are in square metres. Convert with × 0.836127.
  • Haryana: urban plots in gaj or square yards; rural records in kanal and marla (1 marla = 30.25 gaj); collector rates often per square yard or per acre.
  • Punjab: same pattern as Haryana; a killa (किल्ला) is 4,840 gaj. See killa to bigha.
  • Rajasthan: urban plots in gaj or square metres; rural records in hectares with bigha spoken. See bigha to gaj.
  • Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand: gaj in towns, hectares in the khatauni, bigha or nali in speech.
  • Himachal Pradesh: bigha and biswa or kanal and marla in records; gaj rarely used.

In every state the gaj-to-square-foot ratio is 9, so this table needs no state column. The state differences appear only when you go on to bigha, kanal or nali.

How to use this with your document

  1. Find the area in the sale deed, allotment letter or record of rights. Note the unit: sq m, sq yd, sq ft or gaj. Our guide to reading land area in a sale deed shows where it appears.
  2. Convert everything to square feet using × 9 (from gaj) or × 10.7639 (from sq m). Compare with the seller's quote; a difference of more than 2 to 3 percent should be explained.
  3. Measure the plot on site: frontage × depth in feet for a rectangle. Compare with the record. Boundary pillars and the approved layout plan should agree; if not, call for demarcation before paying. See land demarcation (nishandehi).
  4. Compute price per gaj and per square foot from the record area, and compare with the notified circle or collector rate for the location.
  5. Make sure the deed states the area in one unit with the others in brackets, and that "gaj" means square yards rather than running yards.

Carpet, built-up and plot area are different things

A 200 gaj plot is 1,800 sq ft of land. A house on it may be sold as 2,400 sq ft built-up across two floors. Never compare a plot quoted in gaj with a house quoted in built-up square feet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square feet are in 1 gaj?
9 square feet. A gaj is one square yard, and a yard is 3 feet, so 3 × 3 = 9.
How many square feet is 100 gaj?
900 square feet, about 83.61 square metres, roughly 3 marla.
How many square feet is 200 gaj?
1,800 square feet, about 167.23 square metres, about 6.6 marla.
How many square feet is 500 gaj?
4,500 square feet, about 418.06 square metres, about 16.5 marla or 0.1033 acre.
How many gaj in an acre?
4,840 gaj, since an acre is 4,840 square yards or 43,560 square feet.
Is gaj a fixed unit like the square foot?
Yes. Unlike bigha or biswa, a gaj is one square yard everywhere, so the 9 sq ft figure does not change by state.
How do I convert gaj to square metres?
Multiply by 0.836127. 100 gaj is about 83.61 sq m; 250 gaj is about 209.03 sq m.
How many gaj is 1 marla?
30.25 gaj (272.25 sq ft), per our Haryana and Punjab unit guide. A kanal is 20 marla, 605 gaj.
Why does my Delhi record show square metres and not gaj?
Delhi land records and circle rate notifications use square metres. Divide square metres by 0.836127 to get gaj.
Does gaj ever mean a length?
In everyday speech a gaj can be a yard of cloth, a length. In land deeds it should mean a square yard; if a deed says 20 gaj by 30 gaj it is giving lengths, and the area is 600 square yards.
