Killa to Bigha Converter: Punjab, Haryana & Beyond (2026)

Convert killa (acres) into kanal, marla, hectares and every bigha size used in UP, Rajasthan, Himachal and Uttarakhand, with a murabba table, the disputed Punjab bigha set out, the formula and worked examples.

Farmland India Reviewed · Updated October 2026 · Unit values from our live unit guides; Punjab/Haryana bigha disputed

A killa (किल्ला) is one acre: 8 kanal, 160 marla, 4,840 square yards. How many bigha (बीघा) that is depends on whose bigha you mean, from 1.6 to 6.4, and inside Punjab and Haryana the bigha itself is disputed. This converter prints killa against every bigha size on our unit guides, plus kanal, marla, hectare and murabba, and shows why the deed should stay in kanal.

How to read this table

A killa (किल्ला) is the Punjab and Haryana name for a standard field of one acre: 8 kanal, 160 marla, 4,840 square yards, 43,560 square feet. Our live guides to killa and murabba and marla, kanal and killa in Punjab both use this equivalence, and the killa guide is careful to call it the common working rule because it could not open an Act or revenue page that states it. Twenty-five killa laid out five by five make a murabba (मुरब्बा), about 10.12 hectares.

A bigha (बीघा) is a different kind of unit: it changes size from state to state. This matters for the killa-to-bigha question in two ways. First, buyers from UP or Rajasthan who are used to bigha want to know how many of their bigha fit in a Punjab killa, and that depends entirely on which bigha they mean. Second, inside Punjab and Haryana the word bigha is spoken but is not the record unit, and our guides found conflicting figures for it. This page handles both: the main table converts killa into each of the four bigha sizes defined on our unit guides, and a separate section sets out the disputed Punjab and Haryana bigha without choosing a value.

Because a killa is an acre, the bigha-per-killa figures are the same as bigha-per-acre: 1.6 for the 27,225 sq ft bigha, 2.5 for 17,424 sq ft, 5 for 8,712 sq ft and 6.4 for 6,806.25 sq ft, all exact. The kanal, marla and square yard columns are exact; hectares use 1 acre = 0.404686 ha.

Rates not yet verified

Rates not yet verified by Farmland India: confirm on Bihar Bhumi (biharbhumi.bihar.gov.in), MP Bhulekh (mpbhulekh.gov.in) or AnyROR Gujarat (anyror.gujarat.gov.in) before relying on them. We could not open an official Bihar, Madhya Pradesh or Gujarat page that fixes the size of a bigha, and our own unit guides give no figure for these three states, so this page prints no bigha value for them. To find the right value: (1) open the record of rights for the exact village on the state portal; (2) read the unit the area column is written in (Bihar records are usually in acre and decimal, MP and Gujarat records in hectare, are and square metre); (3) if the seller quotes bigha, ask the patwari or circle officer for the local bigha-to-hectare ratio in writing; (4) convert only from the official unit in the record, never from the quoted bigha.

Murabba to killa, kanal and bigha

Large Punjab holdings are often described in murabba. The 25-killa murabba is the common description on our guides, which could not confirm it from an official text; records themselves are in kanal-marla, so always reconcile a murabba figure with the K-M total of the khasras concerned.

The Punjab and Haryana bigha: why we print no single value

If a Punjab or Haryana seller quotes bigha, do not reach for a conversion. Our Haryana and Punjab unit guide says the local bigha is "genuinely disputed" and lists the figures it found without resolving them. They are reproduced below so you can see how far apart they are: between 1.6 and 5 bigha to the killa, a three-fold spread. Ask the seller which figure the village uses, then verify against the kanal-marla entry in the jamabandi (जमाबंदी) and use kanal for the deal.

Figure our guides found for a Punjab/Haryana bighaSq ydBigha per killa if this appliedStatus on our guides
About 8,712 sq ft9685Cited by some sources; unresolved
About 2,420 sq yd (half an acre)2,4202Cited by some secondary references; unresolved
Pukhta bigha, about 27,225 sq ft3,0251.6Cited by some sources; unresolved

For Himachal Pradesh the picture is clearer: our Himachal guide gives 8,712 sq ft, so 5 bigha to an acre, and that is the 8,712 sq ft column in the main table. For Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan use the column for the relevant cluster; see acre to bigha for the state detail.

The formula

Bigha = killa × 43,560 ÷ (square feet in one local bigha). Kanal = killa × 8. Marla = killa × 160. Square yards = killa × 4,840. Hectares = killa × 0.404686.

Reverse: killa = bigha × bigha size in sq ft ÷ 43,560. Ten Rajasthan pucca bigha is 10 × 27,225 ÷ 43,560 = 6.25 killa; ten Himachal bigha is 2 killa; ten western UP bigha is 1.5625 killa.

If the record gives kanal-marla rather than killa, first convert to killa: (kanal × 20 + marla) ÷ 160. See kanal to acre.

Three worked examples

Example 1: a Rajasthan buyer looks at a 6-killa farm near Sirsa, Haryana. 6 killa is 6 acres, 48 kanal, 2.428 ha. In the buyer's home unit, Rajasthan pucca bigha, that is 6 × 1.6 = 9.6 bigha; in kachha bigha it is 15 bigha. The buyer should compare the per-acre price with Rajasthan per-bigha prices by converting both to per acre, not by guessing a bigha for Sirsa.

Example 2: a Punjab seller near Patiala says "4 killa, that is about 20 bigha". 4 killa is 32 kanal, 4 acres. The seller is using a bigha of about 8,712 sq ft (5 per killa), one of the figures our guides list as unresolved. Another villager might call the same land 8 bigha (half-acre bigha) or 6.4 bigha (pukhta). The record will show 32K-0M; write 32 kanal in the agreement and ignore the bigha.

Example 3: a Himachal orchard of 10 bigha compared with a Punjab plot of 2 killa. Himachal bigha is 8,712 sq ft, so 10 bigha = 87,120 sq ft = 2 acres = 2 killa = 16 kanal. The two parcels are the same size. For the permission a non-agriculturist needs before buying in Himachal, see Section 118 explained; for Punjab purchase rules see agricultural land rules in Punjab.

State comparison: how many bigha in a killa (acre)

  • Rajasthan: 1.6 pucca bigha or 2.5 kachha bigha per killa (acre).
  • Uttar Pradesh: 1.6 bigha (central and eastern) or 6.4 bigha (western cluster) per acre; an unconfirmed intermediate figure of about 4.8 (9,075 sq ft) exists on our UP guide.
  • Himachal Pradesh: exactly 5 bigha per acre; kanal-marla also used.
  • Uttarakhand: 6.4 hill bigha or 2.5 plains bigha per acre; about 20.17 nali per acre (43,560 ÷ 2,160).
  • Punjab and Haryana: killa and kanal-marla are the units; bigha disputed (1.6 to 5 per killa across the figures our guides found).
  • Bihar, MP, Gujarat: no value; see the callout.

How to use this with your document

  1. Open the jamabandi for each khasra and note the kanal-marla area. Convert to killa: (kanal × 20 + marla) ÷ 160. Our guides to jamabandi nakal Haryana and Punjab Easy Jamabandi show where the figure sits.
  2. If a killa number is quoted (common in canal-colony villages), confirm it is the full killa and not a part; many khasras are fractions of a killa after partition.
  3. Compare the killa total with the murabba or killa figure the seller quoted. A murabba should reconcile to 200 kanal.
  4. Convert to your own bigha only for your personal comparison, using the column for your home state. Never write bigha into a Punjab or Haryana agreement.
  5. Check the acre total against the state purchase and ceiling rules in state-wise agricultural land purchase rules, and get demarcation before registry (nishandehi).
✓

Killa numbers are not areas

A khasra called killa no. 12 in a murabba is a position on a 5 by 5 grid, not a statement that it measures one acre today. Only the kanal-marla column gives the area.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bigha are in one killa?
A killa is one acre, so 1.6 bigha (27,225 sq ft bigha), 2.5 (17,424), 5 (8,712, Himachal) or 6.4 (6,806.25) depending on which bigha you mean. Punjab and Haryana bigha values are disputed on our guides.
Is a killa exactly one acre?
In Punjab and Haryana usage yes: 8 kanal, 160 marla, 4,840 sq yd. Our killa guide calls it the common working rule because it could not open an official text stating it.
How many killa in a murabba?
Commonly 25 killa (25 acres, 200 kanal), laid out 5 by 5. Our guides could not confirm the figure from an official text.
How many bigha in a Punjab killa if the seller means the local bigha?
Our guides list about 8,712 sq ft (5 per killa), half an acre (2 per killa) and a pukhta bigha of about 27,225 sq ft (1.6 per killa), and could not resolve them. Use kanal.
How many kanal in a killa?
8 kanal, or 160 marla.
How many killa in a hectare?
About 2.471 killa, since a hectare is 2.47105 acres.
How many Rajasthan bigha is a 10 killa farm?
16 pucca bigha or 25 kachha bigha.
How many Himachal bigha is one killa?
5 bigha, since the Himachal bigha is 8,712 sq ft and 5 × 8,712 = 43,560 sq ft.
Which bigha does this page default to?
The 27,225 sq ft bigha, giving 1.6 bigha per killa; change the column to match the bigha you mean.
Should a Punjab or Haryana sale deed mention bigha?
No. The record is in kanal-marla; the deed should carry the K-M figure with the acre or hectare equivalent in brackets.
