Acre to Bigha Converter: All-State Table (2026)

One table that converts 0.25 to 100 acres into bigha for every bigha size used in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana, with the formula and worked examples.

Farmland India Reviewed · Updated October 2026 · Unit values from our live unit guides, no official state table located

An acre is fixed at 43,560 square feet. A bigha (बीघा) is not fixed, so one acre is 1.6, 2.5, 5 or 6.4 bigha depending on where the land is. This converter prints the acre to bigha figure for every bigha size our unit guides define, from a quarter acre to 100 acres, and explains how to check the right one in your record.

How to read this table

An acre (एकड़) is a fixed unit: 4,840 square yards or 43,560 square feet, which is about 0.4047 hectare. A bigha (बीघा) is not fixed. Its size was set village by village during old revenue settlements, and the figure that survives in a modern record depends on the state and often on the district. So there is no single answer to "how many bigha in an acre". There are four answers that cover the states Farmland India works in, and this page prints all four side by side.

The four bigha sizes below are the ones used across our unit guides. They were read from our live pages on bigha in Uttar Pradesh, bigha and biswa in Rajasthan, bigha and biswa in Himachal Pradesh, nali, mutthi and bigha in Uttarakhand and the bigha to square yard, acre and hectare master table. Those pages are honest that no state has published an official conversion table online that we could open; the values are well cross-checked secondary figures. Treat the table as a screening tool, and read the unit written in your own record before you pay.

27,2253,0250.6251.63.95Rajasthan pucca; central and eastern UP; Punjab/Haryana pukhta (disputed)

Because the acre is fixed and each bigha size is a clean fraction of it, the bigha-per-acre figures are exact: 6.4, 5, 2.5 and 1.6. The bigha-per-hectare figures are rounded to two decimals from 1 hectare = 2.47105 acres.

Default on this page: where a single bigha figure is needed in the worked examples we use the 27,225 sq ft (3,025 sq yd) bigha, which is the Rajasthan pucca bigha and the figure our UP guide gives for central and eastern Uttar Pradesh. It is the largest common bigha, so using it as the default gives the lowest, most conservative bigha count for any acre figure.

Acre to bigha table (0.25 to 100 acres, all four bigha sizes)

Find your acre figure in the first column and read across. The column heading tells you which states each bigha size belongs to. If your land is in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh or Gujarat, read the callout under the table before you use any figure.

Rates not yet verified

Rates not yet verified by Farmland India: confirm on Bihar Bhumi (biharbhumi.bihar.gov.in), MP Bhulekh (mpbhulekh.gov.in) or AnyROR Gujarat (anyror.gujarat.gov.in) before relying on them. We could not open an official Bihar, Madhya Pradesh or Gujarat page that fixes the size of a bigha, and our own unit guides give no figure for these three states, so this page prints no bigha value for them. To find the right value: (1) open the record of rights for the exact village on the state portal; (2) read the unit the area column is written in (Bihar records are usually in acre and decimal, MP and Gujarat records in hectare, are and square metre); (3) if the seller quotes bigha, ask the patwari or circle officer for the local bigha-to-hectare ratio in writing; (4) convert only from the official unit in the record, never from the quoted bigha.

The formula

Bigha = acres × 43,560 ÷ (square feet in one local bigha).

Written the other way, bigha per acre = 43,560 ÷ bigha size in square feet. For the 6,806.25 sq ft bigha that is 43,560 ÷ 6,806.25 = 6.4. For the 8,712 sq ft bigha it is exactly 5. For 17,424 sq ft it is 2.5, and for 27,225 sq ft it is 1.6. If a seller quotes you a bigha size that is not one of these four, apply the same division; the result is the number of bigha in one acre for that village.

If you only know the figure in square yards (gaj), multiply by 9 to get square feet first, or divide 4,840 by the bigha size in square yards. One acre is 4,840 square yards, so a 3,025 sq yd bigha gives 4,840 ÷ 3,025 = 1.6 bigha per acre, the same answer.

To go from hectares, multiply hectares by 2.47105 to get acres, then apply the table. Our separate hectare to bigha converter does this for you, and the bigha to acre converter runs the reverse direction.

Three worked examples

Example 1: a 4-acre parcel near Alwar, Rajasthan, record in pucca bigha. Rajasthan pucca bigha is 27,225 sq ft, so bigha per acre is 1.6. 4 × 1.6 = 6.4 pucca bigha. The seller tells you the plot is "6 bigha 8 biswa". Since 20 biswa make a bigha, 8 biswa is 0.4 bigha, so 6 bigha 8 biswa is 6.4 bigha. The quote matches the record.

Example 2: a 2.5-acre parcel in Meerut district, western Uttar Pradesh. Our UP guide places Meerut in the western cluster at 6,806.25 sq ft, giving 6.4 bigha per acre. 2.5 × 6.4 = 16 bigha. If a broker tells you the same 2.5 acres is "4 bigha", he is using the 27,225 sq ft figure, which our guide attaches to central and eastern UP, not Meerut. Ask which bigha the khatauni (खतौनी) uses; in practice most UP khatauni entries are now in hectares, which removes the ambiguity.

Example 3: a 1-acre plot in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. Himachal bigha is 8,712 sq ft, so 5 bigha make an acre and 1 acre is exactly 5 bigha, or 100 biswa. Some Himachal records are kept in kanal and marla instead: the same acre is 8 kanal or 160 marla. Both descriptions of the same acre are correct, and a buyer should be able to move between them. See kanal to acre for that direction.

Common parcel sizes in bigha

Buyers in North India tend to meet a handful of sizes again and again. The table converts them under all four bigha sizes. The one-acre row doubles as a killa and kanal reference, since one killa (किल्ला) is treated as one acre and one acre is eight kanal in Punjab and Haryana records.

State by state: which bigha, and what the record actually says

  • Uttar Pradesh. Two clusters: about 6,806 sq ft in the western districts (Meerut, Ghaziabad, Baghpat, Bulandshahr, Agra, Aligarh are named in our guide) and 27,225 sq ft in central and eastern UP. Our guide also notes an intermediate figure of about 9,075 sq ft whose districts it could not confirm. The khatauni usually records hectares, so convert from hectares when you can. State page: acre to bigha in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Rajasthan. Pucca bigha 27,225 sq ft (1.6 per acre) and kachha bigha 17,424 sq ft (2.5 per acre). Our Rajasthan guide could not confirm a district-by-district map of which applies where, so ask. The jamabandi (जमाबंदी) in most districts is in hectares. State page: acre to bigha in Rajasthan.
  • Himachal Pradesh. 8,712 sq ft, exactly 5 per acre, with kanal and marla running in parallel in several districts. State page: acre to bigha in Himachal Pradesh.
  • Uttarakhand. Hill bigha about 6,806 sq ft (6.4 per acre), roughly 3.15 nali; plains or Terai bigha 17,424 sq ft (2.5 per acre). Hill records are more often in nali (नाली) and mutthi. State page: acre to bigha in Uttarakhand.
  • Punjab and Haryana. The record unit is kanal and marla, not bigha. Where bigha is spoken, our guides found two conflicting figures (about 8,712 sq ft and a "pukhta" bigha of about 27,225 sq ft) and could not resolve them. We show the pukhta figure in the 27,225 column with that warning. Convert from kanal instead: kanal to acre.
  • Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat. No figure on this page; see the callout above and our state pages Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat for the lookup steps.

How to use this with your document

  1. Open the record of rights, not the brochure: khatauni in UP and Uttarakhand, jamabandi in Rajasthan, Himachal, Punjab and Haryana. Our guide to khasra and khatauni shows where the area column sits.
  2. Read the unit printed in the area column. If it is hectare, convert hectare to acre (× 2.47105) and stop there; bigha is only the seller's language.
  3. If the record itself is in bigha and biswa, write the figure as a decimal (biswa ÷ 20) and multiply by the bigha size for that state to get square feet, then divide by 43,560 for acres.
  4. Compare the acre figure with the sale deed draft and with the area the seller quoted. A gap of more than a few percent usually means a different bigha size was assumed somewhere.
  5. Have the patwari (पटवारी) confirm the bigha-to-hectare ratio used in that village in writing if the record is in bigha. Our note on reading land area in a sale deed covers how the figure should appear in the deed.

Price per bigha hides the bigha size

A quote of Rs 30 lakh per bigha is 1.6 bigha per acre in Rajasthan pucca but 6.4 bigha per acre in Meerut: a four-fold difference per acre. Always convert the price to per acre or per square yard before comparing two offers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bigha are there in one acre?
It depends on the state. Using the figures on our unit guides: 1.6 (Rajasthan pucca, central and eastern UP), 2.5 (Rajasthan kachha, Uttarakhand plains), 5 (Himachal Pradesh) or 6.4 (western UP, Uttarakhand hills).
Which bigha does this page use as the default?
The 27,225 sq ft bigha (3,025 sq yd), which is Rajasthan pucca and the central and eastern UP figure. It gives 1.6 bigha per acre.
Is there an official government acre to bigha table?
We could not open one for any state, and our live unit guides say the same. The figures here are cross-checked secondary values. Read the unit in your record and confirm with the patwari.
How many bigha in an acre in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh or Gujarat?
We have not verified a figure for these states, so this page does not print one. Bihar records are usually in acre and decimal, MP and Gujarat records in hectare and square metre; convert from those.
How many bigha in one hectare?
Multiply the bigha-per-acre figure by 2.47105: about 3.95 (27,225 sq ft bigha), 6.18 (17,424), 12.36 (8,712) or 15.81 (6,806.25). See our hectare to bigha converter.
Is a Punjab or Haryana bigha the same as a Rajasthan bigha?
Not reliably. Our guides found two conflicting Punjab and Haryana figures and could not resolve them. Punjab and Haryana records use kanal and marla; convert from those instead.
What is a pucca bigha versus a kachha bigha?
In Rajasthan the pucca (पक्का) bigha is 27,225 sq ft and the kachha (कच्चा) bigha is 17,424 sq ft. The pucca bigha is 1.5625 times the kachha bigha.
Why does a UP seller and a UP record disagree on bigha?
Western UP uses a bigha of about 6,806 sq ft while central and eastern UP use 27,225 sq ft; sellers in between may quote either. Most khatauni entries are in hectares, so convert from the hectare figure.
How do I convert biswa into the acre figure?
Divide biswa by 20 to get a decimal bigha, add it to the whole bigha, then divide by the bigha-per-acre figure for your state. For example 6 bigha 8 biswa in Rajasthan pucca is 6.4 ÷ 1.6 = 4 acres.
Can I rely on this table for a sale deed?
No. Use it to screen offers. The deed should carry the area in the unit of the official record, and the conversion should be confirmed by the revenue office for that village.
